Bathroom Toilet Repair 101

Bathroom Toilet Repair 101

The bathroom is one of the most frequently used rooms in the home and if the toilet breaks down everybody suffers. There are several common things that can go wrong with a bathroom toilet. Some of these problems include not being able to flush properly, leaking, being clogged up or having some sort of back-up issue.

Flushing Problems

If the flushing mechanism doesn’t seem to be working, then you first should take the back lid off the toilet to see that may be wrong. It could be that the lever inside has come loose or the float has come off. These are two things that you can easily fix yourself in a few seconds. However, if the problem seems to be more sophisticated, then you may need to purchase a whole new flushing mechanism. If so, it is a good idea to take the old one to the hardware store to make sure you get the right kind.

Leaking Problem

If your toilet keeps running or is leaking from the bowl or the back, then you must first figure out where the leak is and what is causing it. It could be a loose pipe or fitting that may merely need to be tightened up to solve the problem. However, if not, it could mean that there is likely a crack in the body of the toilet and the whole unit would then need to be replaced. This is best done by a plumber, but if you are good at do it yourself plumbing, you may be able to fix it yourself by buying the needed parts.

Blocked or Clogged Problem

Clogging or getting blocked is another issue that happens a lot with toilets. People put too much toilet tissue or perhaps drop something down in the bowl that accidentally gets flushed and thereby clogs up the pipes. It is possible that you can unclog a blocked toilet with a plunger if the problem is minor. However, for worse issues you may need a plumber’s snake to thread down inside the pipe system to unclog the toilet.
